The Firefox Start page (search bar) now show big, ugly black boxes on the left. How do I turn them off?
When I go to my Home page (Firefox Start) located at http://www.google.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official, big, ugly black boxes appear on the left. They seem to be connected with Google. I find them annoying and want to turn them off. Where is the control? I have not given either Firefox or Google permission to make this change.

Try to clear the Google cookies to see if that brings back the old menu bar just for now.
Run this code in the Scratchpad (Shift+F4) to bring up the new interface if you want to see what it looks like (clear the Google PREF cookie to exit):
document.cookie="PREF=ID=03fd476a699d6487:U=88e8716486ff1e5d:FF=0:LD=en:CR=2:TM=1322688084:LM=1322688085:S=McEsyvcXKMiVfGds; path=/; domain=.google.com";window.location.reload();

Not interested in version 8. How can I fix this in version 7? Sometimes it comes up normal with just the black bar across the top with all the Google stuff. I'm OK with that. I just don't like the "new, improved" Google buttons the size of trucks.
The main reason I use Firefox and Google is that they were simple and unbloated. For power users like myself, you didn't have a bunch of bells and whistles getting in your way. This seems to be going away. Sad.
It is a change that Google has made to its web page(s). Currently not every one gets that new men, but that can change. If they decide to make it permanent then you have to get used to that menu pop-up.
This - http://www.google.com/firefox - is the old Firefox Start Page used by the Firefox 3.6 and earlier versions of Firefox.
Starting with the Firefox 4 version, Firefox is using a "local" Start Page with the address of about:home. It looks similar to the old Start Page, but it isn't exactly the same.
