This may be due to a problem with an add-on. Follow the procedure in the troubleshooting extensions and themes article to see if it helps.

Another cause of the location bar not working is a problem with the file that stores bookmarks and history, for details on that see Locked or damaged places.sqlite - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Make sure that the Location Bar is not set to "Nothing": Tools > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History,Bookmarks,History and Bookmarks
