Cannot restore bookmarks

All of my bookmarks have been erased. I get an error each time I log into Firefox. I tried to create a back-up file of my bookmarks, but none are listed in the Organize Bookmarks file. I tried to restore bookmarks from an earlier date before I started getting the error, but I get an error stating that Firefox is unable to read the files. I tried uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling a new version, but I continue to get the same error. Help!

Delete places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal and see if that allows to restore the bookmarks form a JSON backup.
