Every time I open thunder bird I get masses of email tabs on the screen and have to move them before I get to my inbox Is there a way to have the inbox either as link key or for the inbox to appear on starting David
My guess is that you had those tabs open when you closed Thunderbird, as Thunderbird reopens with all existing tabs. You could go to settings>general and in the Reading&Display section change the setting to use an existing window. Either that or close windows when not using them. A simple way of closing all would be nice and has been suggested, but not done yet.

Install the "Startpoint Manager" (formerly "Start with Inbox") add-on https://services.addons.thunderbird.net/en-uS/thunderbird/addon/startpoint_manager/ and choose the Inbox you want to be selected automatically on Thunderbird startup.
