I need to scan a document and attach it to an email. It has been years since I did this and don't remember how to do it now. Need help to scan on my printer so that I can attach from my scans file.

Hopefully your printer has a manual, or your printer manufacturer has online guidance.

(I never figured out how to scan documents directly to my computer. I always have to stick a little USB flash drive into the printer and use that ferry the scans over to the computer.)
