Running Windows 7. Thunderbird version 52.5.2 I backup up the Thunderbird Profile folder into a Folder I call F& T Backup in MY Documents. As soon as a Copy & Paste the Profile folder into the F+T Folder it changes from a being a folder into over 2,000 items. Now I did find a work around. You this this only happens under "My Documents". When I created a folder called Thunderbird on My Desktop and copy and paste the profile folder in there, it remains a Profile folder. What could cause the cause of the 2,000 items in my Documents and how do I correct it? Thanks for your help! Mike :-)

create a folder in your documents folder to hold it. My guess is you are pasting the profile folder contents into the documents folder. Mine has significantly more than 200 items, more like 200,000 items. But there are a lot of files in a profile folder.

You might check if one of the items created in prefs.js. If it is then you are certainly pasting the contents of the folder, not the folder.
