I'm new to Thunderbird and was told by a Google support tech that I would be able to use TBird to import a .mbox file and retrieve the emails inside. So far I have not been able to figure out how to import this type of file. Thanks.

If you know your way about the Thunderbird profile, I think you could just copy a mailbox file into an appropriate location, and when you next start Thunderbird it would just appear among your email folders.

A more certain way is to use the ImportExportTools add-on, which has a specific option for importing mailbox files.
