Thunderbird doesnt seem to stay open lo"ng enough to even get the # of emails waiting to download. I only get one at a time when I first open up my email. Then when I click get messages", nothing happens. If I close my email program then reopen it, I may be able to get one more. There should be at least 50 waiting on me today.

lets look at thins in the light of day.

You open Thunderbird and it goes to get mail. So you interrupt that by asking it to stop and get mails. Hardly efficient.

However what we usually find when people complain that they can only get X mails at a time, is that their anti virus program has lost the plot. Disabling anti virus email scanning is usually a cure.
