The requested URL /www.mozilla.org/thunderbird_releasenotes/en-US/thunderbird/2.0.0.24/start/ was not found on this server.
Since the above on appeared at start up, the dictionary disappeared in the load more dictionary menu non shown, also checking for updates "non available"
Any advice/guidance would be gratefully received.

Your upgrade needs to take several steps.
install V5. a more stable V3 but still with the V2 profile conversion tools.
That is here. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/5.0/win32/en-US/
Install V12
Here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/12.0/win32/en-US/
Then go to the current version which you can get from Getthunderbird.com.
The only risk is you may loose your existing password file. This did occur on upgrades from V2 for some folk. So I suggest you make a note of the information before you start.
The intermediate steps are to update your profile folder for structural changes that have occurred over the years. I think V12 is required, but can not remember why. But it is only a small step.
Whn you do the V5 upgrade, make sure you run the upgrade wizard. I think it was on the help menu, if it does not run for you. There are some interface changes that were supplemented by add-ons. One was the loss of most of the information on the folder pane with regards to size and numbers of mails. Do not install the add-on offered, just wear it until you get to V38 (current) which brings the information back. Other add-ons offered in the wizard like the compactheader still are in use.
