Why does autocomplete pick an address which is NOT the one shown first?
When I enter the letter "r" into the "To:" email address field, I get a list of possible addressees. I understand that the list is sorted according to whom I select most often, which is good. The friend to whom I send most of my emails appears at the top of the list - the line the cursor is on. This is expected. But sometimes if I then press the tab key the address it selects is NOT the one that was on the line before I pressed the tab key. This isn't good because I don't always remember to double-check the selection it made.
Why does it sometimes NOT pick the one that's at the top of the list?
I can't replicate the behavior at will. It happened tonight, and I replicated it. I then altered the "nickname" entry for the person to whom I wished to be my first choice, and the behavior changed, for the better. But then I changed the "nickname" back to what it was before and it still works correctly, so obviously the "nickname" field isn't determinative of this behavior.
I appreciate any information you could share with me. Thank you!

Is it? I wouldn't bet on that.
As of Thunderbird version 31 autocomplete matches search strings contained in a word. A word can be the name (first and last name, display name), and the email address (including the domain part after the @ sign).
Before version 31 autocomplete did only match the beginning of words, and it would never have found something when searching for a domain.
So essentially you do get more hits initially when start typing the search string. Make sure the correct contact is highlighted prior to hitting Tab.

Thank you for your reply. I'm prepared for the list to be sorted in a way that I don't expect. What I'm talking about is when the top entry IS the correct entry, there have been times when the top entry is NOT the entry which is picked when I press tab. I'm asking why that happens.
