I have a Firefox Flame that was working just fine until a moment ago when I asked it to forget the open wireless network that it was connected to (that appeared to work) and connect to a password protected network.

Instead of connecting, the wifi just switched off. Tried to turn it on and the icon cycled through as though it was connecting to a network and then shut back off. I tried restarting my phone.

What else can I do?

Very particularly, what seems to be going on is that I can connect to new networks and old good networks, but if I'm in range of a network for which I once entered a bad password, FirefoxOS tries to connect and then switches the wifi off when it can't connect. I don't get an error and I can't touch any of the preferences with wifi off.

The only real workaround I've found is to wait until I'm connected to a good WiFi access point and then go into my wireless settings and delete the offending connection. Then when I am back on campus (where I have not yet connected successfully) I can try again, with different settings.

This is odd. Firefox OS will normally just drop the connection and continue to scan for other access points.

What version of Firefox OS are you using? You can check this by launching the Settings app, then scrolling to Device Information. Tap it, and see what it says under Software. If it does not say Boot2Gecko 2.0.0.0-prerelease, you may want to see if updating will help. Tap System Updates > Check for updates

For better or for worse I'm running Boot2Gecko 2.0.0.0-prerelease.

The network where I'm having issues uses PEAP authentication, FWIW.

CORRECTION: the issue also happens on a WPA protected network.

Were you able to successfully Forget the network you're having issues with?

more options

Yes. I have to be connected to a good wireless network or I cannot "forget" the bad one, but if I remember to do that I can forget it.

At my work, there are two networks, one is just a standard WEP password the other uses PEAP to authenticate by username and password. What I could do is go down to the security desk and get the guest wifi password, or look on my laptop to see what the actual correct settings are for the PEAP network (I just did, that's how I know it is PEAP). Instead I keep trying to connect, forgetting that if I get it wrong I can't just try something else until I get to a place where I can get in to forget the offending network.

But this is clearly not the intended behavior.

To forget a network:

  1. Launch the Settings app
  2. Tap Wi-Fi
  3. Tap "Manage networks"
  4. Tap the network you don't want and then hit Forget

Try connecting to the network manually. After tapping "Manage networks", tap "Join a hidden network". Enter the SSID and password, and then select WPA-EAP for security; that should cover PEAP.

I hope that helps!

When it is trying to connect to a network for which it has a bad password, it just spins. The wifi settings all appear to be "loading" -- I can't click "Manage networks." it is greyed out.

Very odd indeed. I don't know what the problem is. Next time you are able to successfully Forget the network, could you try to reconnect using the steps I outlined earlier? Keep us posted!

This could be a software issue, have you tried to update to a new version of Firefox OS to see if this would resolve the issue?
