I too intensely dislike this trend. I recognize that some environments are adopting this monochrome styling, but here on my laptop, everything else is still coloured and it seems crazy that TB and Firefox can't just go with the flow. Why on a Linux laptop replete with colourful Gnome 2 icons should they impose what Google and OSX seem to think is fashionable?

The answer to restoring colours in icons is to seek out a theme that reinstates them. In Firefox I'm using https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-2-theme-for-firefox-3x/ and in Thunderbird I use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/xpdefault/?src=api
