Downloads now pop up over browsing window - how to disable?

Since the latest update of Firefox, I now notice that each time I download anything the downloads icon in the toolbar expands the download history and remains in front of the browsing window until I click out of it. This behavior is reminiscent of the Chrome browser opening a pop-up bar every time I download anything which had to be manually closed — a regular irritant. I can see where some may prefer to have the pop ups, but I don't appreciate it becoming the default. Is there any way to disable this behavior so that it downloads in the background as it used to?

Chosen solution

Enter about:config in the URL bar and set browser.download.alwaysOpenPanel = false.
