The Preview pane is ON every time I start Thunderbird. I know how to toggle it off (→F8), but how can I turn in OFF by default?

Chosen solution

If TB is not starting with the same layout it had on last exit, open the profile folder and delete or rename session.json. Help/Troubleshooting, click Open Directory to open the profile folder, close TB, edit the file, restart TB.

If that doesn't work, there may be some app that is resetting TB preferences. CCleaner on Windows is an example.
