Why do message notifications remain after deleting the messages?

I've switched from K-9 to Thunderbird for Android.

One difference I've noticed is that the message notifications remain in the launcher even after I've deleted those messages in Thunderbird. Thus, I have to handle messages twice.

Is there a setting to make notifications go away when the underlying messages have been deleted?

There's been a spike in notification related issues being reported. Developers are managing these with high priority. See this github milestone for more information.

Sub issue #10936 seems similar to your issue. You can add your report to that ticket, or one of the other sub-issues if more applicable or open a new ticket for your issue here.
