My bookmarks disappeared

Hello, I never sign into my account when browsing but I've had bookmarks for years. This last update, they all disappeared. I read about profiles and looked at them but it is gone.

I signed into my account new and still no bookmarks. Is there anything else to do or they are gone?

Interesting that Microsoft updated also and my documents folder is no longer linked with the My Documents icon. I have to go to the C drive to find users and then my documents. I don't know if that's related.

I guess I have to stay signed in so Mozilla can track me.

Thanks, David

It's a common misconception that browsing without signing in means your data isn't saved. In reality, Firefox stores your bookmarks and other browsing data in a local "profile" on your computer. When you signed into a new account, you likely created a new, blank profile that doesn't have your old data. The key is to find your old profile and recover the bookmarks from there.

Here's what you can do Check for an "Old Firefox Data" Folder, after a major update, Firefox sometimes creates a folder on your desktop called "Old Firefox Data." If you see this, it's a backup of your old profile. This is the best-case scenario.

Find Your Old Profile: Even if you don't see that folder, your old profile is likely still on your computer. You just need to find it.

Open Firefox, In the address bar, type about:profiles and press Enter.

This page will list all the profiles on your computer. The one that's currently in use will say "This is the profile in use..." Look for another profile, especially one with a different name or a different creation date.

Click the "Launch profile in new browser" button for any other profiles listed. This will open a new Firefox window with that profile's data. Check if your bookmarks are there.

or

Manually Restore from a Backup: Firefox automatically backs up your bookmarks. Even if a profile is corrupted, the backups might be fine.

In Firefox, go to the menu, then "Bookmarks," and "Manage Bookmarks".

In the window, click on the "Import and Backup" button.

Select "Restore" from the menu.

You should see a list of dated backups. Try restoring from a backup that was created before the update happened. If that doesn't work, you can also select "Choose File..." to manually import a backup.

If you found the old profile folder from step 2, you can look inside it for a folder named bookmarkbackups. This folder contains the .jsonlz4 backup files. You can try restoring one of those.

Syncing with a Mozilla account is a convenient way to back up your bookmarks to the cloud and have them on multiple devices

Thank you. I had to restore manually and search the drive for the bookmarkbackups folder. I found a bookmarks file from a few days before the update. I have them now.

Much appreciated.

David

That's fantastic news David, Glad to hear it!
