Everytime I open Thunderbird it starts to download about 12000 message headers. Is this normal ? if not , how do I stop it.

It sounds like the inbox IMAP folder needs some sort of validity checking. It is a fairly common nonoccurence on IMAP folders, especially if you compact them. (It is part of the process)

It is not normal for every start however.
