When I use Firefox as my browser, everything I print from the internet is so small I can barely read it. I finally started using IE, as I don't have the problem there. I performed all of the troubleshooting tasks that were recommended in the Firefox help section. None of them worked.

Hi eastonedge, the paper size selection might remember the last used size, which would be convenient/irritating, depending on what application set it last. If you find that you need to change this often each time, try updating it at the driver level, through the Start menu > Devices and Printers list.

Is this with printing pages or viewing internet pages in a browser tab?

You can set the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref on the about:config page to 1.0 or on Windows 8 to 1.25 and if necessary adjust layout.css.devPixelsPerPx starting from 1.0 in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.1 or 0.9) to make icons show correctly.

I am so sorry, but I am not a computer tech, and even if I were, I should NOT have to go thru all of this just to get my printing correct. Firefox printing has worked just fine for years now, and then all of a sudden, the tiny printing starts, so THEY must have done something to create the problem. I will just use IE or Google Chrome.

But I really do appreciate all of your suggested solutions however. You went way beyond the call of duty here, and I applaud your patience!

When you use Print Preview:

Is the text also small there, or does it look normal?

Is the text small from edge to edge or the page, so margins look normal, or is Firefox using only a portion of the page?

If you play with the scaling on the Print Preview toolbar, e.g., try 80%, try Shrink to Fit, etc., does Firefox comply or is it ignored?

There is absolutely NOTHING that changes the outcome. As a "for instance", I go to my online BofA bank account and try to print out the activity, and it prints teensy, teensy in the middle top portion of the page. It's only been recently that this started happening. I've been able to print the activity out perfectly for years. It HAS to be a Firefox problem. I'm bummed, but I guess I'm going to have to start using IE.

Hi eastonedge, it sounds as though Firefox might have the wrong:

  • paper size
  • margin width
  • text scaling (try 100% in Page Setup dialog, uncheck Shrink to Fit checkbox)

For the first two problems, did you already try clearing saved paper information for the printer, either by using right-click > Reset in about:config or by editing the prefs.js file? This might be the article you've already seen (but just in case): Fix printing problems in Firefox see the section entitled "Reset all Firefox printer settings".

Firefox normally derives the paper size and printable area information from Windows by extracting information from your default printer settings. I'm not sure what kind of printer you're using, but in the Print dialog, could you click the Properties button and check the paper size/margin/scaling settings to confirm that they match your actual paper?

Although add-ons generally do not affect printing in particular, you could rule out interference by an extension by visiting the same page in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool which disables extensions and various advanced features which cause glitches on some systems.More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset)

Any difference?

Does this same problem affect other printers? If you do not have another physical printer, you could try a PDF printer (you "print" to it and the print job is saved as a PDF). If you don't have Adobe Acrobat, you can try one of these instead:

As with all freeware, keep an eye out during the install process for any unwanted extras, choosing custom install if available to check what's included.

Firefox in safe mode didn't help. It actually went the opposite direction, now everything is SO HUGE, it won't fit on the page.

Tried printing to Adobe PDF. Now I have a huge printout of a tiny square piece of the whole page that should have printed out.

Hi eastonedge, it sounds as though you may have some conflicting settings or extensions that are causing these enormous size swings.

If you visit the following page in Safe Mode, what does it report on the line "window.devicePixelRatio ="?

Did you install any extensions to change your Firefox zoom level, such as the ones mentioned by cor-el?

It might help to just show us a list of your extensions. You can extract it from the Troubleshooting Information page:

Help > Troubleshooting Information

In the upper left corner, click "Copy text to clipboard" then paste into your next reply here.

I checked "Properties" in the printer dialog box, and it had "User Defined" and 3.0 X 4.57 .. ?????? WTF?! So I switched it to "Letter", and I think that fixed the problem! How the heck did it ever get changed? And am I going to have to keep on changing it everytime I come back to the internet to print?
