How do I remove Blinkx.com?

In the last few weeks my computer has been taken over by malware, half the links are inaccessible because of hovering links to Blinkx, every time I click on a link a new tad to an akamaihd page comes up. This drain on my PC is ruining the the experience and slowing my machine down to a crawl.

The cleaning software I've tried does not solve the problem, and methods of removal are worthless because after a restart it's back again.

I refuse to believe mozilla is in partnership with these companies and that is why they cannot be removed. I use Zonealarm security firewall and an Antivirus program and nothing works to remedy the problem.

Please help.

Some wal-ware will stick around, so you have to scan for it.

============================

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

I believe my problem is similar to yours. I too cannot believe the problem lies with mozilla being in partnership with the malware sites, but rather with Internet Explorer. It is definately with one or the other. Internet Explorer seems to post a page with ads from a company everytime my computer is not being used for a few hours or overnight. I have used Firefox for over two years and discovered after installing it that I still had to keep Internet Explorer in my system, otherwise I would just uninstall IE altogether. I am not computer proficient and have no idea how to fix this problem. My Windows system restore does not give me a restore point far enough back to help. My System Start bar has disappeared, so I can no longer do a system file search to find these malware files to delete them. This also causes me to resort to rebooting my desktop in order to shut down. I posted a question on the help forum and have not received a reply.

It’s very sad, but many of the software down-loaders / installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well. You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print. You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does. From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.

Hi goodgirl0130, what is your default browser, IE or Firefox? The reason I ask is there is some malware that creates a Scheduled Task to open a page in your default browser at the same time every day. Or perhaps it could create multiple tasks. See this thread for similar issues: When my computer is idle for awhile, mozilla will open on its own with a different web page each time.

About your Windows difficulties, you should try one of the specialized malware clean-up sites listed at the bottom of the support article, and also try a more Windows-focused forum to help with restoring proper function.

Hi Nathanicus, can you disable or remove the "Plus-HD-2.6" extension? It seems to be associated with injecting ads into browsers. Use the Add-ons page, either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or remove).

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

If Remove is not available, you need to remove the extension either through the Windows Control Panel , Uninstall a Program (click the Installed On column heading to bring the most recent stuff to the top) or by physically deleting it from disk. More on that if needed.

And... the general malware sweep is also important because external software may inject the extension back into Firefox.

Note that Firefox's defualt engine is Google for the URL Bar and the Search bar, this malware is not part of mozilla.
