What does (1) in black mean next to my Inbox please? New emails show in red but the (1) never goes away.

Recently in the left panel I've started seeing (1) in black next to Inbox as if I have a new message, which I don't. If I receive a new message the (1) in black changes to (2) in red but after I read the new message the (1) in black remains. What does (1) in black signify please?

Chosen solution

Red signifies you have 'New' mail Black means Unread (1)

If you have threads enabled then an unread mail could be lurking somewhere in the folder.

Quick method; Use the 'Quick Filter Bar' - click on the icon for 'Show only unread messages' and it should reveal the unread email. Click on same icon again to go remove the filter.

Ah! Thanks. It was a message buried from 18 months ago. I remember searching for mail from the sender, I must have inadvertently marked one of them as Unread.
