Hi, bear with me while I explain. I had the first, main email account (fm) for years with thunderbird (th). I added in a second and secondary account (gm) a bit ago and there was no problem. Then a couple of days ago fm stopped sending out messages. It wanted the password for the account. Since it is a third party app system, I don't have the original password but deleted and reinstalled fm with a new third party app password. Again it asked for the password when I wanted to send something from fm but it did not work when I put in the new password. I hope you have followed so far.

I deleted the gm account and then fm sending worked but the minute I added gm back in, it stopped. However, if I put the gm account in first then add the fm account, then sending with fm works without a problem. I am flummoxed. I have asked fm's support for help but it seems like a th issue so I am asking here too. I would like to have fm's account at the top as if gm's account is at the top, I have to scroll down to get to some of fm's folders. It is not a big deal but would be nice if I could install fm first. I also just want to know if anyone has any insights or ideas into this baffling situation? Much thanks in advance, Yasmine

You can install the accounts in any order, and any account can be set as default (at top of folder pane) by selecting the account in Tools/Account Settings, Account Actions at the bottom of the left pane, Set as Default.

The problem with sending may be because the wrong smtp server is assigned to the sending account. Select an account in the left pane of Tools/Account Settings, then look at Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the bottom of the right pane. Make sure the fm account is sending on the fm smtp server with the same user name/password, the gm account is sending on the gm smtp server etc.

Open Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved passwords and remove any obsolete passwords.

Hi, the idea of default changing the position of the accounts worked beautifully :). Unfortunately, that triggered asking for the password again when sending emails :(. Since it is a third party app system when the password is generated and then disappears, it is hard to keep deleting the account, reinstalling it and then putting in the password, sigh..... I will keep at it and let you know if I find a solution. It is all very weird. My email provider, fastmail, is confused too. Thanks, will update soon, Yasmine

Changing the default account or the order of the accounts in the Folder Pane shouldn't have any effect on the passwords assigned to the accounts. The password can be stored in Options if you check the appropriate box when prompted the first time to enter the password. After that, the password should be sent automatically. Unless you have another program managing logins and passwords.

Hi, the answers were all helpful and now I know about default accounts and them being on top :).

The problem is solved but for the life of me I don't know how, sigh.... I am glad things are back to normal but unfortunately I can't outline what the problem was and how it was solved.

Thanks to all who spent the time and effort to help :), Yasmine
