Hi,

Is or would it be possible to allow private and normal browsers to have different settings? In particular, I would like my private browser to not suggest URLs from my browsing history or bookmarks, but I definitely want to keep that function for my normal browsing. I intend to stream work that I'm doing in my browser and I don't want previous history such financial accounts or collaborator websites to appear. I realize that I can change settings before or after I stream, but it will be a pain in the long run and will probably use Firefox as my main browser and a different browser for streaming.

If it doesn't exist, what technical challenges would prevent it from being implemented?

This question is somewhat of a follow up to a different question that someone brought up regarding address suggestions in private mode (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1178089).

Thanks

Chosen solution

On Mac it might be more effort to switch profiles because on other platform you can create a desktop shortcut and specify the profile via the command line or target line. You can use a command line switch (-P "profile") in a terminal window to specify what profile to use.

I assume that bash scripts work on Mac the same as on Linux, so starting Firefox via a bash script or Apple script might be an alternative.

My suggestion is to use a separate Profile for Private Browsing. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data

I actually haven't set up different profiles before, but it does seem like it could be useful. I guess this information changes my original question -

Private browsing isn't necessary if different profiles can be created and launched on demand. Is there a way to use different profiles in Firefox without needing to manually change preferences each time I would like to switch contexts? A terminal command to launch an instance of Firefox with an alternative profile would be great

Perfect. For my use case, using two different profiles and launching from command line seems like it will do the job. Thanks for the suggestions the-edmeister and cor-el!
