Gmail+Hangouts Lockup

more options

Intel x86-64. i5-3XXX (4 cores). 16 GB RAM. Windows 10. Firefox 59.0.2.

For the last day or so, my Gmail tab has been locking up hard every time I bring up a Hangouts chat. Can't switch to other tabs, can't refresh the tab, etc.

In Process Explorer, I see one of my Firefox processes chew up all available CPU (across all 4 cores). If I kill that process, then the Gmail tab crashes and I can reload it.

I can open up Hangouts in it's own tab and work with it just fine with no problem - it seems to just be the integration with Gmail.

I've refreshed Firefix, disabled all add-ons (uBlock Origin mainly), etc, and it's still doing it.

Anyone else seeing this? I'm seeing lots of chatter about new Gmail coming - I'm wondering if in prep for that, they did something to break things...

Thanks, Pete

I didn't _have_ to install the Beta release, but I already had the latest stable release installed for my GPU. The only other option was the beta release. See: AMD HD 7470 GPU Driver Page. I had the latest stable one (WHQL) installed already, so I figured I'd try the Beta.

So I restarted in SAFE mode and the lockup does NOT happen. So that's good.

So I restart with in NORMAL mode, but I disabled ALL my add-ons before opening up the gmail tab. Still OK. I could have sworn I did this before and it locked up. Anyway....

So I enable uBlock Origin, but disabled on the gmail domain. Still OK. So I enable uBlock Origin on the gmail domain. Still OK.

So I enable Privacy Badger, but disabled on the gmail domain. Still OK. So I enable Privacy Badger on the gmail domain. Still OK.

So I enabled my other add-ons and everything still seems OK. I restart multiple times and everything is still OK.

ARRRGGGHHH. I hate bogon bugs like this.

So - my only guess at this point is maybe one of uBlock Origin's block lists blocked something it should not have have? And that list got updated at some point during all my restarts and disable/enable steps - and so the the problem fixed itself.

Anyway, I'll run for a day and assuming everything is still OK, I'll mark solved.

Thanks A LOT for your help Pkshadow!

Hi Pete, sounds like have tried a bunch of stuff would have suggested. I am wondering since the info sent shows you are running a AMD Radeon HD 7000 series (which I also have and get drivers for still monthly through the Raedon Settings Icon on the Task Bar) and that your driverDate: 8-3-2015 is so old is the issue as Windows 10 can and will Change any and all Hardware Drivers when it feels like with out telling you.

You can check this out by searching for Device Manager and see if it changed other drivers like your sound (which it did to me). Find out which HD 7000 Series exactly while you are there. Then I suggest following this :

then going to AMD and sticking the info in on this page :

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

So the reason I have not updated my GPU (AMD HD 7470) driver since 2015 is that AMD has not issued a non-Beta release for my GPU since 2015.

In any case, I attempted to update to the latest ("beta") driver available for my GPU - it made no difference.

Gmail+Hangouts locked up immediately on startup.

The weird parts is if I Sign Out of hangouts in the Gmail window, I can open up hangouts.google.com, sign in there and everything works fine.

Obviously, Chrome does not have this problem.

That is very strange as I have 7970 and a 7950 and have never had to install a beta. Now that I have your version I checked, so extremely weird what a few version differences can make.

Please try in : SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)

(VIDEO CARD)

  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

TEST''''is issue still there ?

Privacy Badger and/or uBlock Origin will be disabled which maybe the issue also besides Hardware Acceleration.

Can try this if does not get you working in Safe Mode as it maybe : Please try : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 59.0.2 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
