My wife tried to download a new free game but obviously she did this from a suspicious webpage because now we seem to unintentionally be stuck with Internet Speed Tracker, which is horrible. Have made 2 attempts to remove from my computer, failed. Looked on the Internet for other solutions, but most of which are unreliable, suggesting download of "free" malware programmes. So I hope Firefox Support can provide trustworthy recommenations. I would be very grateful. Thanks.

That 'Internet Speed Tracker is a browser hijacker, malware that you of course need to get rid of.

Running the malware scans, mentioned in the article that James has given you a link to, is a must. But you will have to do more than that (better safe than sorry  !) :

Go to the 3-bar menu (or 'Tools') => Addons => Extensions and look for any unfamiliar or suspicious looking extensions.

When you find any : remove them.

Do the same in your system's Control Panel.

However : most malware will be 'hiding' somewhere and that's why you need to run the malware scans.

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. They all work differently - what one program doesn't pick up, the other might.

Seperate issue :

Your system details show that you need to update your Adobe Flash Player - you're running an older version, which can cause problems. Would you please uninstall your current version and install the latest version, which is 28.0.0.161

Uninstaller : https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

Note : some 'extras' may be offered in the download.

HI. Some delay in the recommended actions. I ran 3 of the malware programmes and already the 1st on top identified and quarantained (sp?) 5 files. After restarting the computer and opening internet I no longer find the Internet Speed Tracker. I do not fully understand your instructions on the next action, message March 2 5:53:59 regarding "Go to the 3-bar menu". My computer runs in Dutch language, so maybe a screenshot may help understand where to locate the suspicious extensions. Your advice to remove and reinstall latest update of Adobe Flash Player is not working. I removed it but now cannot reinstall, it keeps giving communication error (4 attempts) and returns to the first screen. I have only untagged the McAfee options since I have a different anti-virus programme. Any suggestions? Thanks. On 10 March I could no longer start-up internet. In the end I had a re-set of my computer back to Feb 28, 2018. Now the malfunctioning Adobe flash player is back on line and I have internet back. Did another malware check and now only two problems surfaced which apparently do not relate to the Internet Speed Tracker. In addition I now understand the 3-bar-menu but did not find any extensions at all. A notification appears in this menu saying Shockwave Flash must be updated but when I try this it leads to the computer trying to have me install Adobe and same connection problem returns. I cannot fix it. Anyone out there?

Hello Henk,

I replied to the private message you sent me and explained why you have to run all malware scans (because most malware will be hidden somewhere).

Re Shockwave Flash : that's how Adobe Flash Player (which is installed on your system) displays itself in the '3-bar menu' (you now know how to find that) => Add-ons => Plugins (those are not extensions).

You say that you uninstalled the older Flash version, but you can't install the latest version - what's the exact error message that you see  ?

As an alternative you could try this : download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player.exe

Hi Happy112. The messages (translated from Dutch) I got when trying to reinstall the flash player, 1st screen "Connection failed. Click "TRY AGAIN" to continued with the installation. If you do not respond on time, a 2nd screen appears with "Click "Complete" and start the installation again. I gave up on repeating this process over and over. And do not feel much like uninstalling Adobe again and end up without proper internet. Thanks for all your help. It has been educative. Much appreciated.

Would you give that last link I gave you a try  ?

If you'd feel more comfortable doing this in Dutch, you could post a question on a Dutch support forum :

If you want to get rid of that Speed Tracker : niet zo gauw opgeven, hoor  !
