I am struggling to actually completely purge my bookmarks. To be clear I would really rather keep some of them - and Ihave figured out how to do that on an individual installation (like my mac and windows desktops), but every time I seem to have the issue sorted out to my satisfaction, the Mozilla Account regurgitates back thousands of (mostly duplicate) bookmarks during the middle of the night or something.

I've disconnected all my devices from my account and then purged them locally - deleted the places.sqlite file; deleted all the backup .jsonlz4 files in the bookmarkbackups folder and then placed a trimmed down "safe" bookmarks.html file in my profile to be recreated next time I fire up Firefox. That works - I get a nice concise set of bookmarks.

It seems though that the sync account doesn't allow any means for me to either purge the whole lot or tell it specifically that a particular device's bookmarks should be used as a new set.

The only solution I've come across is deleting my entire account, which seems... drastic. But maybe that's the only way to go...

Type about:preferences#sync<enter> in the address bar. First, shut down sync on all profiles/systems. Use the Manage Account button.

After, close the sync account.

Now open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Save your current bookmarks (JustInCase) by,

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file. Copy the file to another computer. Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML.

Now you can remove the unwanted bookmarks. Once you are done and satisfied, save the new bookmarks using a different filename from the backup you made above.

Now create a new sync account. After, remove all bookmarks from the other devices. Later, have the other devices login to the new sync.

Hi. What you have written is more or less exactly what I have already done - except the last part about creating a new sync account. I guess that is the key to this. Seems odd, but that's life.

Thank you.

You can change the password of the Sync account to remove all data stored on the Sync server.
