Bring back Tab Mix Plus or equivalent!!!!!!!

more options

When are you going to bring TAB MIX PLUS or an equivalent back? I want total control over fire fox to open a new tab each and every time I click on a link, bookmark, or web address. Having to use the context menu each time is a step BACKWARDS. Your Quantum version has eliminated too many customizing controls, going back to version 52 or IE.

That is not going to happen :

Look for a alternative but copy/paste your search term into the window.

fyi: Going back : unfortunately 56.0.2 and below is no longer safe to use for every day use do to secuity issues, but 52.5.3 ESR. It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page:

Note : Legacy Extensions will be deleted or removed in any version update after May 2018. You should make a backup of your Profile before going back and just because:

When you want bookmarks to open in a new tab you can do this :

Type in the address bar about:config (press Enter) (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type in the search bar and look for the preference :

browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs

and set its value to true

Then close and restart Firefox for the change to take effect.

When you want a link or URL to open in a new tab, you can press Ctrl + link or URL. But you probably already knew this ......

The vast majority of Extensions being hosted at addons.mozilla.org are made by a third-party author or company. Mozilla makes very few of the extensions listed there apart from this https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/user/mozilla/ account.

Besides the right-click and open in new tab. There is the Middle-click (scroll wheel) and the Ctrl + left-click.

While no one can bring back the full functionality of Tab Mix Plus right now, at least two of your requests are possible:

Try this:

Links

Normally, links open in the same tab UNLESS the site has specially coded them to open in a new window (and then Firefox will usually divert them to a new tab). You can use an add-on to override this and force every link to a new tab, or if you want links to the same site to stay in the same tab, every link to a different site.

Two steps:

(1) Install: Open Link with New Tab

(2) Set your preferred behavior on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then find the extension on the right side and click its Options button or More link.

You should have these options, as shown on the Add-ons site:

Bookmarks

Firefox 57 has a new preference to automatically direct bookmarks to a new tab:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste book and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs preference to switch the value from false to true

(4) If desired, switch these as well if you think you might want to open more than one bookmark at a time:

  • Open the tab in the background (don't immediately switch to the bookmarked page): browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground => true
  • Keep the bookmarks menu open until you close it: browser.bookmarks.openInTabClosesMenu => false

Success?

Web Addresses

If you mean links, you're covered. If you mean the address bar -- you do not want to have to hold down the Alt key when you press Enter to direct the URL to a new tab -- then I think there isn't a new add-on or setting for this yet. However, someone else might know of one.

P.S. With Firefox's normal configuration, you are not limited to the right-click context menu. You can direct a link or bookmark to open in a new tab using either of these:

  • hold down the Ctrl key while clicking the link
  • "middle-click" the link using the mouse scroll wheel
