Since update, Thunderbird blocks my signature image in outgoing messages. Any way around this?

Since the last update, Thunderbird has been blocking my signature image in outgoing mails. Even when I unblock it manually via the notification, it still looks like a broken link when I send it. Is there any workaround? I don't want to lose the ability to add images to my signature. Thanks in advance!

There is a discussion here that suggests you need to include a 'data URI' for images in signatures. Another suggestion in the same discussion proposes a simple way to produce the URI data and create a signature with images that are permanently unblocked.
