Not quite so simple, for it could be that you are referring to fake updates.
Assuming that's not the case :
Go to the 3-bar menu (or 'Tools') => Advanced and check the setting under 'Updates'.
Would you care to share with us why you don't want to update and stay on version 50.0 ?
Last version I have (may have been a few more) that doesn't crash, slow or lockup my computer fairly frequently. The newest one won't function with whatever comment software the online WSJ is using. Simply typing in the comment box and then clicking post would get a warning of attempting to post malformed content. Selecting the comment, cutting it and then pasting back in the comment box would produce what was typed, plus "img {-moz-force-broken-image-icon: 1;} "
I'm not "tech" and these are aggravations I don't need.

Would you be so kind as to post a new question about this - people who will look at this thread are expecting to see posts about how to turn off update notifications ......
I'm on version 56 & want the ability on an older WIN 7 laptop to use an add-on that isn't compatible with 57 & forward.
On my tools menu there is NO option for Advanced, to control the auto-update feature.

You jumped into a thread that was started by a user who was using an older version of Firefox - Firefox 50.
The Options panels were changed for the Firefox 56 version. Now located in the General tab of Options, under Firefox Updates > Allow Firefox to - like 3/4 of the way down that General panel.
