Firefox 55 eye strain problem

Firefox 55 is too bright for me, or maybe it contains some new graphic filter: I have an eye strain problem, so I have returned to Firefox 54. It's the first time that it happens to me during all the firefox versions that I have updated. Some more hypothesis: maybe the problem it's a different kind of rendering, or a different kind of blurring during zoom, or some forms of flickering (that human eye can't see). I don't know. Coders should know if something has changed.

Few more info: usually, I have eye strain problems with screens brightness (so, I always use a very low brightness, "under 0". I mean: graphic cards can bring brightness more down than basic monitor options); and I have heavy eye strain problems with antialiasing and all its derivated forms (bilinear, trilinear and anisotropic filtering, ambient occlusion, HDR illumination, depth of field etc. etc.), but I don't think this is the case: for me, it's a common problem with some videogames, but programs usually are made "clean" (in relation to these problematics). In 15 years, I have had problems with no more than 6 programs (and I have used hundreds of programs).

Thanks for the attention.

I don't think firefox became brighter in the latest release. For reducing your eye strain, you can try using f.lux or something similar to reduce the blue tone of the light. I found that this way your eye feels much better than staring at white light.

I’m sorry, If you have read my post, you already know:

1) I’m a very sensistive person about eye strain. I have described what can cause me problems, so it's not only a brightness matter.

2) I have no problems with other programs (I work in IT sector: I use many of them) and I have returned to firefox 54 without problems (I have never had this problem with all previous versions: firefox 54 and all previous versions are safe for me).

So, thanks for your reply, but it’s not focused about my problem. Anyway, I know blue light problem and, usually, I use something similar of f.lux for smartphones. About monitors, I use blue light free/safe monitors.

Probably no more than 1% of population has eye strain symptoms that can be so aggressive (headaches, articular pain etc.). It’s not only a matter about eyes tired or “red eyes” (and I have also problems with many kind of LED backlights). Of course, symptoms are not always so aggressive: it depends to the problem source (for example, as I have already written, antialiasing and all it’s derivated forms/graphic filters can cause me heavy eye strain problems).

I add another hypothesis (about firefox 55) : some changes in fonts visualization or their shadow (if present).

Four years ago, I have had a similar problem with a version of google chrome and I have completely abandoned it: today, I literally don’t know if it can be a good alternative for me, but I hope to can continue to use firefox, that it's my favored browser.

What I’m searching here, is a firefox coder that can say me: “no, we are sure we have changed nothing relative in some manner to graphic/visualization; try again, maybe you were just tired”; or “yes, we have changed this…”.

In another words, I’m searching professional support. Maybe I’m in the wrong place.

Can you please file a bug report on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ with all the technical details so the developers can take a better look at the issue. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Ok, thanks for the link. I will take a look there soon.

I have created a bugzilla account and I have described my problem in details using feedback option. Before to send the comment, a disclaimer advised me that comments are public (all can see them), but I can't find/see my feedback in any area of the site.

Where can I see the comment feedback that I have sent?

Can you confirm if you filed a bug. Go to My dashboard and select "New reported by you". If not try to file a bug, I don't understand what is feedback in the context bugzilla.

Hi jagan,

Thanks for your replies.

I had already checked the dashboard before posting here my previous post: it’s empty (and I think it’s normal). I explain: follow your link (the link you have given me), log in (if you have an account there) and click “File a bug”. On the top, you will see some options that include feedback. The two feedback options are: “Offer us an ideas on how to make firefox better” and “Provide feedback about firefox”. I think it’s almost the same to choose one feedback option or the second one. Anyway, choose one of them, select one of the “faces” (I have chosen the sad face) and you will be ready to post the feedback. There, there is the disclaimer about the fact that these feedback comments are public, but I can’t find them.

Anyway: I think to understand what you mean. You refer to the real bug section of the site and suggest me to post there. I have preferred the feedback option because it’s not a real “bug” what I’m speaking about. Do you think it’s better I post my problem as a bug? Maybe I can post it in the general bug section, but the point is that, post it or not post it in the bug section, it doesn’t change the fact that also feedback comments are public (according to the disclaimer that I have mentioned above), but I can’t find them.

Just for the record - I have tried again firefox 55 in a very relaxed situation and I confirm: immediately bad feeling and in less than half hour headache and dizziness.

Finally: English is not my language. If something that I have written is not clear for you, let me know.

Regards

I think it will be easier for the developers who are involved in design to see a bug directly as a proper bug report. A bug report is also easier to track for you as well. Please a file a bug if you feel that is the case and can be explained in proper terms in the report.

A Windows 10 user who uses a High Contrast theme mentioned in another thread that some tooltips are now unreadable (seems like the text and background color became the same). That makes me think that there were some changes in Firefox 55 that may not have been fully tested with all the Windows 10 themes. Are you using a non-default theme?

more options

jagan: Ok, I will post it also as a bug.

jscher: No, I don't use a non-default theme. I use just a very low brighteness (monitor = 0, but thanks to graphic cards it's under 0). Also the gamma that I use it's set less then the default.

I am not an IT pro and I don't suffer from regular eye strain but just got assaulted by 57.0.4 and my eyes are tearing and I am having difficulty even reading the tabs the contrast is so intense. I just checked Safari and my eyes felt fine. Not being a tech person, I don't think a bug report is appropriate. What I need is a real human responding to an ordinary non IT pro concern.. or else I will lose the use of Firefox altogether... this is blinding!

Hi kitty,

Considering your problem regards a different firefox version, I suggest to you to open a new thread (to use this one it creates a bit of confusion).

I hope someone can help you with a quick and smart solution, but if your problem can't be resolved changing your graphic and/or screen options, and you don't resolve uninstalling and re-installing firefox, there is the possibility that the right solution it's the help of the coders. I'm in contact with them about my problem (using bugzilla) : I don't know yet if my problem will be resolved, but for sure, in my case, it's the only way to resolve it.

UPDATE: I see only now that a new thread about your problem has been created: good.

@goodkitty, did you try to adjust your monitor brightness and contrast as well? That would also be a place to start as well.

goodkitty was asked to continue this in their own thread :
