normally, print to file documents are in ascii text.

this is old technology. in todays world you can be more successful with doing screen prints or print to pdf's or print web pages.

This is the ext portion in the document, the rest is encoded. I really need to get the data back or print it somehow.

In ancient times, the application would format the output for the selected printer, and then print to file would save that to disk. To print it, you could open a command line and use COPY to send the file to the printer. Of course I no longer remember the details...

So what to do... Your readable text indicates:

LANGUAGE=PCL

Is there a way to decode PCL to text or PDF? When I search for that I see some results that look interesting, but have no idea whether any of them work. Of course, be very cautious using web services with sensitive printouts.

I've tried 4 separate applications in an attempt to convert it and thus far none have succeeded.

try temporarily changing the extension to .txt then see what notepad gives you. it could be garbage but maybe you will be lucky.

btw: why in world did you use print to file? did you uninstall any printers since making that file? if so, you might need to reinstall that program.

so maybe you can get more info on this by opening your printers control panel. click on any printer>select printer properties>ports tab.

in the ports tab you will find the drivers assigned to ports, one being print to file. so see if there is a device assigned to this port. you cited PJL in the thread. so see if something about PJL is assigned to that print-to-file port.

if so, then install the software for PJL or review the PJL's faq's for "print to file" steps. there may be a software or command line that sends that file to the printer.
