Why do I see a double a display of attachments?

Occasionally I'll open an email that will contain 1 or more attachments (pictures). I'll see the pictures displayed twice. The other day I experienced an extreme case of getting a message with 1 attachment and having it display continuously every time I hit the page down key. Why does this happen?
