I know I can go back to version 40 to regain the ability to open my homepage in every new tab but can I do this without taking this step? Has a workaround been found for versions 41 onwards?

Thank you. I was aware of this addon but it still has a 'not available for Firfox 43' notice on it's page. Might be easier going back a couple of versions.

With Firefox 41 (and higher), it's no longer possible to customize the page shown in a new tab via changing the preference browser.newtab.url in about.config. Because of the fact that hijackers abused the preference in the past, Mozilla decided to remove it (see bug 1118285). Fortunately, by removing it, Mozilla also introduced a new API to bring this functionality back to life as an add-on. This add-on allows the user to choose a certain page in a new tab.

New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

This is also available using Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis) {web link} Restore squared tabs, appmenu, add-ons bar, small button view and more on Australis UI (Windows/MacOSX/Linux + Fx 29+).

Classic Theme Restorer might suit. I've used it previously but didn't know about this setting.

New Tab Override isn't available for version 43.

Well Extensions authors may only support the more current Firefox versions for their recent extension updates. The old Firefox 43 has been EOL once Firefox 44.0 was released. https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

The only supported Releases currently is Firefox 48.0.2 and Firefox 45.3.0esr. Firefox 49.0 Release has been delayed from Sept 13 to 20.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/versions/ Version 3.0 Works with Firefox 45.0a1 and later Version 2.3.1 Works with Firefox 41.0a1 and later

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/versions/ Version 0.5.2 Works with Firefox 44.0 and later Version 0.5.0 Released Works with Firefox 41.0a2 and later

Thanks James.

The question was more about getting this functionality with the versions of firefox people are actually using rather than having to keep up with constant updates to do so. For a lot of people, automatic updates only suit if there's a guarantee that no interface changes will be implemented without sufficient warning allowing us to switch off auto in good time. Either that or a one button system allowing immediate return to the previous version.

Regarding my question, I'll take it as a no and continue searching for alternatives.
