I've installed 4 Add-ons: Google Translate; Text to PDF File; Print Friendly & PDF; The Add-on Bar (the latter in an attempt to solve my problem). The problem: None of these Add-ons display anywhere, making them inaccessible for use. Even the Add-on Bar does not display! I've been round and round and round thru all the so-called support pages trying to solve this problem, but nothing there seems to address it.

Do you see any error messages in the Browser Console about these extensions?

It is possible that there is a problem with files in the profile folder that store the extensions registry.

Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

If you see disabled or not compatible extensions in ""3-bar" menu button or Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then check if there is a compatibility update available.

  • click the cogwheel button (left of the Search bar) on the about:addons page to "Check for Updates"

If this didn't help then delete add-ons.json and possibly prefs.js in case there is a problem with preferences.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

I have read thru the information that you provided, but am unable to follow the instructions, for these reasons:

"NB: The Browser Console command line (to execute JavaScript expressions) is disabled by default. To enable it set the devtools.chrome.enabled preference to true in about:config, or set the "Enable browser chrome and add-on debugging toolboxes" (Firefox 40 and later) option in the developer tool settings."

Please understand that I am an ordinary user, not a developer, and that this bafflegab totally confuses me and makes no sense to me at all. Is there any way that I can go back to a version of Firefox that does not require a degree in computer engineering to make fundamental use of it? I just want to be able to create PDF files from those on the screen. The previous version allowed me to do that easily, until it was "improved", so that it no longer works!

Sorry. I know that you are trying to help, but I cannot understand these instructions, and also cannot even find the keys ("cogwheel button") that you refer to. > > Mark it as solved > This doesn't solve my problem

Your post above is confusing. First it says; "unable to follow the instructions, for these reasons:" But then you copy the response from Cor-el.

Are these instructions better?

Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.json, extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

After, restart Firefox.

See "Corrupt extension files":

You will have to approve the updating one last time.

Installed Plug-ins

Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0 Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0
Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Flash: Grab the uninstaller from here: Uninstall Flash Player | Windows Uninstall Flash Player | Mac

Then reinstall the latest version.

Note: Windows users should download the active_x for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the active_x.

Typed about:support as instructed. Closed Firefox. Deleted extensions files (4). Restarted Firefox. Screens appeared asking me if I wanted to recreate the extension files, including the Toolbar. I went thru each of these individually, and recreated the extensions. Result: No visible Add-On bar, no Add-ons anywhere. They are all listed in the "about:Add-ons" screen as being active, but appear nowhere.

Went to suggested file: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions Found section on corrupted extensions. Corrupt extension files Files that store information about the extensions you have installed can sometimes be corrupted. Deleting them can fix a number of extension issues; they will be regenerated, as needed, the next time you start Firefox. [15] [16] [17] Exit Firefox completely, then open your Firefox profile folder (read the linked article for its location) and delete or rename these files (the specific extensions.* files you find depends on your Firefox version): extensions.cache extensions.rdf extensions.ini extensions.sqlite extensions.sqlite-journal (if found) extensions.json You may also need to delete or rename the compatibility.ini file, to rebuild some other files in the profile folder.

Followed instructions there. Deleted only two files labelled "extensions.* Also deleted a folder labelled "extensions".

Restarted Firefox. This time, there were no add-ons or extensions listed in extensions panel. Re-installed extensions for PDF conversion, Google Translate, Add-On Toolbar. Re-started Firefox.

Result: Extensions are all listed as active in extension page. No extensions appear anywhere on the Firefox page, including no "Toolbar".

Re: Multiple versions of Shockwave Flash.

N.B. I haven't installed any of them, so Adobe is the one the screwed up.

Following instructions, I downloaded the "uninstaller". However, it is downloaded into Firefox somewhere, and when I close Firefox as instructed, the uninstaller file disappears with it. I tried to copy the file from Firefox, but it will not allow that. So the only way to run the file to uninstall the Shockwave Flash is inaccessible when Firefox is closed, as instructed!

Another Question: I never had any problem with Firefox (for several years) until just recently with 46.0.1. Is there any way I can go back to an earlier version that works without having to have a degree in computer science? I once was considered a computer guru by my friends (internships at IBM Advanced Systems Development Division for two summers, actually bought a TRS-80 Model 1, etc.). However, studying medicine did not allow me to keep up. Wes Clark
