Sometimes Computer Freezes 100% Until Slowly-Loading Page Finishes Loading

Sometimes, especially when a page is slow to load, my computer will become completely non-responsive until the page finishes loading. It won’t respond to the mouse or any keys during that time; cursor is stuck in place. While I haven’t actually timed it, I get the impression that an occurrence can last anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute when it happens. It’s something that has been happening sporadically for a year, maybe more. But it seems to be happening somewhat more frequently now, e.g. 2-5 times a day (though not *every* day), so I am writing to see if anyone has any ideas on what might be going on and how to fix it.

I have done a disk check on the hard drive, including checking for bad sectors, and it checks out OK. Besides, I don’t have freezes while in any other programs or functions (and that includes IE 11, though I use it a lot less than Firefox), so wouldn’t that rule out drive issues or faulty memory?

It’s not usually much of an inconvenience given that it is sporadic and usually lasts a minute or less, but my main concern is whether malware can somehow take advantage of the “freeze time” (or, worse still, is causing it). Of course I can’t even access my antivirus or firewall during that time, although neither reports anything unusual in their history after it happens. I *have* run malware checks with Norton Internet Security and Malwarebytes, and no issues were found. I’ve checked my CPU and memory history for the periods when the freezes occurred, and don’t see any spikes during those times.

This would be hard/inconvenient to test definitively using Firefox Safe mode since it can still be very sporadic. While there are now stretches where it happens 2-5 times a day, I can still sometimes go a week or longer without the issue occurring.

I have Windows 7. Thanks.

Is this happening on pages that have a fixed background image?

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.
