I lost all my bookmarks during a browser update and they won't restore
Icedragon (firefox derivative) updated to version 44 from 43 and lost all my bookmarks. When I try to restore the bookmarks from the all book marks library window, nothing happens. I see a bunch of backups and I picked the most recent. How can I fix this?
Chosen solution
cor-el: No dice there either. But thanks to all for your time and help. I uninstalled and wiped any residual bits then re installed. All the bookmarks came back. Don't know what happened or why; I'm still scratching my head. If anyone has a theory or knows why a clean install of the browser worked, I'd like to hear.
Thanks

Hello,
Firefox automatically creates backups of your bookmarks, which can be helpful if your bookmarks are lost or missing. To recover them, follow the instructions below.
- Use one of these methods to open the Bookmarks Library window:
- Firefox 29 and above: Click the Bookmarks button and select Show All Bookmarks.
- Previous Firefox versions: Click the Firefox button and click on Bookmarks. (If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Bookmarks button or Bookmarks menu item and select Show All Bookmarks.)
- At the top of the Library window, click on Import and Backup and select Restore.
- Click the date of the bookmark backup you want to recover.
- In the new window that appears, click OK.
- Your bookmarks from the selected date should now be restored.
For more information, see the Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer article. For other solutions, see the Recover lost or missing Bookmarks article.

Thank you.
Did you try to Restore the next-older backup file?
rahuldecoded: Read that, Did that, Burned the goofy Tshirt. Several times. None of the "backups" do anything. When I click on one the confirmation window opens, I click ok, the window disappears, my cursor goes hourglass for about 30 seconds, and then goes normal. Nothing else.
the-edmeister: No dice there. Tried those and the copy/paste suggestion from the tech page posted by rahuldecoded, before I posted my question to the world.
You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_process_the_backup_file_-_Firefox
The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.
- bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.
You may have to restore an older backup manually if the recent backup(s) are already affected.
