I used to (long ago) be given the option to chose what folder bookmark was going to be stored in when I created it. Now when I click the star the bookmark is stored in Recently Bookmarked. I recently noticed that when I cut and paste the mark to the propper folder the mark in Recently Bookmarked is still there. If I delite it from there it also gets delited from the folder I pasted it in as well. I had not noticed this until recently so many bookmarks I thought I had are gone. Am I missing something here?

Chosen solution

On the page you want to bookmark, do a right click in an empty area of the page. At the top of the menu, press the Star. Hot key; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) D.

Or, Press the bookmarks Star on the toolbar.

This will place a bookmark in the Unsorted Bookmarks Folder. To edit or move that bookmark, press the Star again.

A window will come up with the name of the page and its web address. You can edit these entries.

Next, select what bookmarks folder you want this bookmark in. If you do not see that folder, go to the far right of the Folder line, and press the down arrow. You can also create a new folder.

I see now how to direct the mark to a folder but if I delite it from the recently bookmarked folder it also gets delited from the folder I created it in. How long will the recently created list become?

but if I delite it from the recently bookmarked folder

That is a shortcut to recent entries. Deleting from the recent folder will also delete the entry,

Some information about so called smart bookmarks folders:

  • "Most Visited" and "Recently Bookmarked" and "Recent Tags" are examples of so called Smart Bookmarks folders and are not real existing folders.
  • Smart folders show a list created by a query of the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history in Firefox.
  • Smart folder lists show a maximum of 10 entries by default.
  • Bookmarks and history items that show up in a smart folder list are stored elsewhere in another folder and any changes made are applied to the real bookmark or history item.
  • Actions like copy & paste or delete that you perform on bookmarks in such a list are done on the original bookmark.
  • If you do not want a specific list then remove that query (right-click: Delete), but do not delete the content that is displayed in such a list.

Thanks cor-el,

That explains things well.

Rather silly waste of resourses in my opinion. If I click the star to create a bookmark I should get a menu asking where to put it, make my choice and be done with it. Thanks for the help!
