Is this a webmail inbox? Are you using an add-on?

Firefox itself is just a browser, you need an email client or web interface to have mail inboxes.

That is an issue with your e-mail provider. I don't think you can have a sub-folder in the inbox. However, the inbox is itself a sub-folder. Go up one level from the inbox, and create the sub-folder there.
