When attempting to open internet w/Firefox, I get a message asking me if I want to update. I think this may be an invader on my desktop system. How can I fix?

In my System Tray I click on the Mozilla icon and usually the 'net opens automatically. Yesterday this changed; I click and get a message asking me if I want to use the 'updater' to update my Mozilla. I'm thinking I have a virus or something on my system and want to know 1) how do I check for an invader; 2) how do I get rid of it?

Hi, if in any doubt, to check for updates, open the 3-bar menu > Help (question mark at bottom right) > About Firefox.

It's possible that the notification is coming from your extension McAfee WebAdvisor, which you could try disabling if you wish (Ctrl+Shift+A to open the Add-ons Manager).

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Version 41.0 of Firefox was recently released, so this might be legitimate. Can you get a screenshot of the dialog box?

Here's an example of an old update's dialog box: http://s3.amazonaws.com/download.windowssecrets.com/images/wsn/W20090924-Firefox1.gif.

YES!  :) I followed the instructions above re checking the version of Firefox operating on my computer...it did need the Sept. 22, 2015 update to the new version. My thanks for the help!
