Bookmarks, or the bookmarks Star ?
Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.
Open the Add-ons Manager. Locate the add-on and press the Options button. Select All of the tests. Then press Execute on the bottom.
The IE tab extension has been reported to cause this issue.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

For some reason, in Firefox 40, a number of extensions can cause this problem. In particular:
- IE Tab (various versions of it)
- Tree Style Tab
If you have any of those, could you try disabling them to sed whether that is the source of the problem? You can use the Add-ons page. Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that allow you to bookmark pages again?
