New tab opens when I click email link, this doesn't happen with IE or Chrome

I use a specific website for work. When I click a hyperlink on the website that is supposed to generate an email, it also generates a new tab for no reason. This is a waste of time. This also doesn't happen on the same website in IE or Chrome.

Those are extensions for Firefox. You can access the Firefox Add-ons page using one of these methods:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. On the right, enabled extensions are listed alphabetically, with disabled extensions at the bottom.

As a general test for problems caused by any extension, the user can try the same pages/functions in Firefox's Safe Mode. That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

(Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run)

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

If the problem goes away, usually that points to an extension as the culprit.

Bear in mind that other aspects of Safe Mode may be more relevant to display glitches (hardware acceleration) or crashes than extensions, but in this case, I'd look at extensions.

I can't think of a reason for this to work differently in Firefox than in other browsers...

How is your mailto set up: does it go to an external email program, such as Thunderbird or MS Outlook, or to a webmail site?

I know I work as a Dell Technician and was remoted in to this customer. It is really throwing me for a loop. When he clicks the link it opens a MS Outlook email AND also a new tab in firefox. If I go to Firefox Options, Tabs, uncheck open new tab option the only different is it opens a completely separate FireFox browser rather than the new tab. He stated he contacted the website and they claimed they couldn't help. Not sure where else to turn. Thanks for looking into this.

This might be due to a tab-related extension such as TabMixPlus or Tab Utilities. Those might have a feature to force a new window for links that do not have that in the code sent by the server.

That makes sense and thanks again for looking into this. Do you know how I could verify this and if it is something like this going on how to resolve it? Would those extensions be located in Outlook itself or part of Mozilla Firefox?
