I'm now on Firefox 32.0.3. A few revisions ago, I noticed that the rendering of the "current tab" has changed, making it look like a manilla folder tab. This new rendering makes it very difficult to select the tab just to the right of that tab. In order to select it, I have to carefully position the mouse cursor onto only a handful of screen pixels, otherwise it will select either the current tab, or the tab TWO slots to the right.

I appreciate the fact that there's a keyboard shortcut(s) to do this. I should use it more, as I use keyboard shortcuts for many other things. However, when I am using the mouse, it would be nice if it was easier to do this simple thing.

hello dkarr, are you using any themes or extensions which could modify that behaviour - by default the tabs shouldn't shrink to such smallness that it would become difficult to select them...

Well, I have the "Custom Tab Width" extension, but I frankly don't think it's doing anything. I had the min width set to 10, and then I tried doubling it to 20, and that had no effect on the appearance, even after restarting Firefox.

Just so it's clear, I specifically said that it's now hard to reach the tab to the right of the current tab. There may be only a handful of pixels I can reach on that tab. I can, however, easily click on the tab to the LEFT of the current tab.

10px is way too small for the tab width. You should at least have the tab width set to the width that pinned tabs have and that is about 34px If the tab isn't completely visible then you may have to scroll the tab into view with the mouse scroll wheel or the tab scroll button.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

this is the default layout of firefox - tabs won't become narrower than that:
