I recently started getting this message intermittently on various websites and having to click on it sometimes many times to get rid is getting to be a pain. Most of the web self help stuff relates to IE8 and I recently allowed my PC to download a whole bunch of updates without checking first. A lot related to IE8 which I don't have -I uninstalled on the day I bought the PC, so may be a problem there? I'm a PC numpty, so easy to follow steps to remedy the problem would be much appreciated, thanks.

Chosen solution

Did you change the size of the Windows page file?

Making this file that small as suggested in that thread is not recommended and that solution was meant for XP that has poor memory management. You should leave the size of the page file at the value that Windows suggest as suitable (optimal). If Windows runs out of (virtual) memory then the OS will crash and with a low value this will happen sooner or later.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The solution I found here http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6142_102-552413/out-of-memory-line-1-i-d-like-it-to-go-away/ seems to have done the trick - so far.

Thanks for the heads up Cor-el, I've changed it back to letting the system manage it and its reverted to 4035mb. No recurrence of the problem as yet.
