Can't restore previous tab history after updating to version 24
The restore option "restore previous session" is gray. I tried the instructions on firefox to restore a backup. But I cannot open back up files with Windows 7. Must have to do with the "default" extension. Is there any freeware to solve this problem? I could only find useless promotions from Microsoft partners and unauthorised registrations of my files on e.g. "mybackup" or PCHealthBoost. They advertised to be supposedly free, but are not!
I have not yet reset firefox in order to keep the tabs before installing the new version
Thank you very much beforehand!

Step 1 would be to salvage your sessionstore files and make backup copies before exiting Firefox or making any other changes.
Open your active Firefox profile folder (personal settings folder) using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Copy all files that start with sessionstore to a safe location such as your documents folder.
Does the sessionstore.bak file look as though it has a timestamp of your last good session, or something later?
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
- do not clear the Browsing History
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Clear+Recent+History
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.
You can check the browser.sessionstore.* prefs on the about:config page and reset user set (bold) browser.sessionstore.*prefs to the default value via the right-click context menu to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.
If you experience one or more of the following problems with Firefox 23+:
- after a crash, Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session does not restore the last session, but restores the session before that one;
- YouTube videos always start muted,
then try this:
- In the Location bar type about:config and press <Enter>.
- In the Search box at the top, type browser.sessionstore.
- In the resulting grid, double-click on all lines shown in bold, to set their Status to default.
- In particular, verify that browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash has been set to true.
