Where are the bookmarks from a previous install of Firefox? Why does Firefox not have a quick and easy way to transfer bookmarks from a previous install? I don't use Internet Explorer so there's nothing there to import.

The import utility is quite vague "Locate HTML file" I don't know what the bookmark file is called or where it is located.

== It's been this way forever. Why is it PITA to locate my bookmarks?

Hello.

I hope this support article helps you:

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Lost+Bookmarks

I should also say that Firefox 4 will have integrated synchronization technology which will help people backup their bookmarks and history, and even share it among different Firefoxes (with a password, of course). In the mean time, do read the article, and be aware that you can backup your profile folder (to locate it, access about:support in your address bar and click "Open Containing Folder" to open your profile folder). You may also be interested in using one of the many existing bookmark synchronizing extensions like Xmarks or Firefox Sync.

Thanks for your reply but I am still not clear on anything as to where the bookmark file is located and what it is called. Those programs seem to assume that I have a backed up bookmark file and know where it is.

Firefox dumps so much of itself all over the place and I just wish to simply copy the bookmark file from my old disk to my new disk. I don't care about anything else associated with the old profile. I just want the bookmarks.

It used to be quite simple to do this. Now it seems to be a major PITA.

It is very simple. You're probably just confused, but don't worry.

Your Firefox installation is all in one place. Usually at c://program files/mozilla firefox/

Your Firefox profile is also one in one place. You can find its location very easy by typing about:support in the address bar, pressing enter and then clicking "Open containing folder". It will take you right away to the folder where your profile is stored. This is, of course, your current profile, but if you have the folder of your old profile (where you have the bookmarks), you will see there a file called bookmarks.html. If you know where it is, you can use it to import the bookmarks from that HTML file:

I was able to track down a previous bookmark file from an apparent auto-save. I did some poking around and found the backup bookmark files of my current profile and then imported one of the .JSON files of the profile from my old disk.

Windows 7's stupidass search made it difficult to locate files I was looking for. I searched for bookmarks.html. It found none. I manually browsed around and found a default bookmark file. I ran the search again from the same location and then it found the file. Apparently Windows 7 search requires that you know the full path and name of the file you are searching for in order for search to locate it for you. WTF?

Thanks your help.
