Why does FF lag when using pop up ommands, e.g., javascript:popUp('images/aventura/aventura_Cutaway.jpg')? IE doesn't have this problem.

Does this command open a new Firefox window? Does opening a new window manually (Using File -> New Window) also lag?

If so it's best to try http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode since it's likely caused by your add-ons or settings. Does it work acceptably in the Firefox Safe Mode?

Just stumbled on another thread where someone said that disabling "Fast video download" extension helps. Try it: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+extensions+with+Firefox#How_to_disable_or_uninstall_extensions

Thank you Nickolay. In fact, it was the "Fast Video Download" add-on that caused the lag. Unfortunately, this is likely a popular add-on and visitors to many of my client's sites will assume the javascript pop-up command doesn't work. Must try another method.
