Moving TB 115.18.0.0 esr (64 bit) on Win7 PC to a Win 11 (64 bit) new PC

John Calton

I have read the question posed by a member wanting to do a similar move to the one I want to make and the standardised method that Mozilla publishes. My worry is :- If I download the latest TB program onto my new Win 11 PC, will it be compatible enough to receive all the files and emails I've saved to an external HDD, from my Win 7 PC? As I got burnt by eMClient's transfer of my emails, two years ago and lost 5 years of emails/contacts, I am naturally anxious about this same procedure in TB. (I transferred to TB, because of this and am very pleased with the way it is working on my Win 7 PC) Any hints and tips from anyone would be very gratefully received. John

All of your accounts, messages, folders, preferences, etc. are stored in your Profile. The default location of your Thunderbird Profile is <C:\Users\(your Windows account)\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird>. This folder can contain multiple profiles if you have them. This is separate from the actual program folder.

Profiles are forward-compatible but not necessarily backward-compatible. That is, a Profile created by an older version can be happily used by a newer version. The newer version may change the format of some of its files, so it may no longer be able to be used by an older version. You may have to make a few tweaks, and you might have to re-authenticate your accounts, but in general things should work pretty much as they did before.

It's safest to keep an intact copy of your Profile somewhere handy until you have completed the migration, in case something goes wrong. Even after that, it's best practice to make regular backups of that folder if your email store is precious to you.

It sounds like you already found the method of transferring a profile from one computer to another. If you would like help with that, ask here or start a new thread.

> Profiles are forward-compatible but not necessarily backward-compatible.

This is partly true. Best practice is to not jump more than major version number at a time, because each major version can have migration tasks that run. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/upgrading-older-version-thunderbird

So start with 128 on windows 11 from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/128.13.0esr/

Thank you both very, very much.

Yes Lin, I would like some more of your advice on transferring a profiile from a Win7 OS to a Win 11 OS. I have 2 more days to study your advice, before the new computer arrives. Best wishes,

                           John

You will find basically this same method of transferring a profile from one computer to another in various places around this site. This is my slightly more verbose version of it:

- Exit Thunderbird on the Windows 7 computer.

- On the Windows 7 computer, open Windows Explorer, the file browser.

- In the address bar, type "%appdata%" (no quotes) - this will take you to the folder where your Thunderbird data, including your profile(s) reside. You should find yourself in "C:\Users\(your windows user name)\AppData\Roaming".

- Find the folder named "Thunderbird" and copy (not move) it to a thumb drive or other transfer device.

- On the new computer, download the installer suggested above by Wayne, "Thunderbird Setup 128.13.0esr.exe".

- Run the installer to install the program.

- When you run Thunderbird for the first time, you will be prompted to set up an account. You don't want to do this at this time, so cancel the setup wizard and exit the program. What will have happened is that the installation process will have created all the necessary folders to hold your soon-to-be transferred profile.

- On the new computer open Windows Explorer, the file browser and go to "appdata" as above.

- Copy (not move) the Thunderbird folder from your transfer device to the AppData\Roaming\ folder. You will be warned that there are already files with the same names. You want overwrite them all.

- When you next run Thunderbird you should see all your accounts, folders, and messages. You may need to authenticate yourself with your passwords again, and some preferences may need to be reset.

- Now go to <Help | About Thunderbird> to check for updates. Apply the update, and after restarting Thunderbird, check again. You may need to do this several times before you're finally up to the current version. Your Add-Ons may need to be updated as well.

- Congratulate yourself on a job well done... unless something unexpected happens, in which case we'll fix it.

Many thanks Lin. I've already copied and printed off all the procedures that you and Wayne have been kind enough to send me and will read them very carefully before I transfer TB from Win 7 to Win 11. You are both stars and have given me more information in two posts, than all the experts from eMClient did in three months.

                            John
