Download location changed from last path to Downloads folder
Sorry if this is addressed elsewhere but I could not find it. After a recent update Firefox (Windows 11) started each website file download (mostly pdfs) at the Downloads folder. Previously, it would start at the most recent folder to which I downloaded a file. Since nearly all of my downloads are in a few neighboring folders way down the folder tree, I now have a ton of navigating to do for every single download. This is not sustainable. I have done a lot of Googling and investigated several suggested changes to about:config. I changed browser.download.folderList from 1 to 2. I made sure that browser.download.useDownloadDir is false. No effect. Any other suggestions? I am considering abandoning Firefox altogether. It has issues with some parts of the Medicare website. And an earlier update seemingly eliminated my ability to set a particular web page (Google) for new tabs, due to which I often wait a while for the page to appear, then realize I must click on Home. I like Firefox , but too many issues are accumulating and I can't seem to find solutions. Thanks for any help.

Hello,
To force firefox to ask where to save each file, go to about:config, then search for browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite, then set to false. If it doesnt exist, right click a blank area, select new>boolean, name it browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite, and set it to false.
Next, you can try going to about:config, searching for browser.download.improvements_to_download_panel and setting it to false.
Next, go to menu>settings>general>files and applications, then select Always ask you where to save files instead of a default path.
Thanks for the reply. I added the savePerSite item and set it to false. It seems that this one determines whether it uses the most recently used folder overall or the most recent one for a particular website. Either option would be OK for me. I also added the ...improvements... item and set it to false. My Menu>Settings> area does not have a General menu. It does have a Downloads menu that has an item "Ask where to save files before downloading." This has always been checked. And it always has asked me. After all this, when I try to download, Firefox still asks and presents the default path as the Downloads folder, not the most recently used one. Other info browser.download.lastDir does have the correct last path used for download. But it is not presented when I try to download. Instead it always starts with the Downloads folder. I am learning more as this goes along, but I still don't know enough yet to solve my problem.
There has been a few reports and now a bug is filed for the general issue: bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2077656
(Feel free to add your particular configuration to the bug, e.g. your lastDir being correct, but not prepopupated in the system picker etc.)
