Are there any "best practice" advice regarding organising storage of messages in TB?

What is the best way in TB of organising the storage of email messages on my local storage device:

  • Many folders/subfolders, each containing a limited number of messages?
  • Few / One Archive folder containing all messages, each message tagged with one or more tags for easy search/retrieval?

I would prefer the latter, but I am unsure if there are any limitations to how many messages that can be stored in one folder i TB.

  • Are there any practical limitations regarding the no. of messages in one folder?

You have essentially two questions (which I have organized in your posting).

The answer to both is no.

A happy compromise might be a yearly archive. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/archived-messages

Otherwise, go with what fits your desired workflow. Note however, it's not advisable to have that "archive" folder mean having all mail in your Inbox.

Dear Wayne, Thanks for your reply. In my current setup, I move the messages away from the Inbox/mailbox onto a local, offline storage (my own NAS), secured by regular backups.

One question remains, though:

1) Are there any practical limits to how many messages one folder may contain before it either hits a limit hard (crashes) or before performance is otherwise affected.? I have searched the article you linked to, but that does not mention anything about size restrictions other than how many messages I try to archive at one time using the "Archives" tool.

2) Maybe the setup options of one folder for all, or one folder per month or year, is a way to limit the number of messages per folder without really saying so?
