Greetings.

I am using an old Linux Mint version. I got messages that my Firefox needed to be updated.

I finally figured out how to do that and updated it. I started to use it. No problems.

However, the update did not change the default Firefox in the menu or on the taskbar panel below. If I click on them, I get the old version.

So when I restarted the computer, when I clicked on the Firefox shortcut icon in the lower taskbar I got the old version with the tabs that were on it. I had to go back into the Firefox file downloaded for the update in order to open the new version.

So, how do I get a working shortcut icon for the new version and get rid of the old version/icon?

Thanks.

David

I don't use Mint and what desktop you have (be in Cinnamon, Xfce, Mate or another) however its seems to be the same where you just right-click desktop and create launcher. Put in a name and use the command field to navigate to the firefox folder and select the firefox-bin and a desktop launcher shortcut for Firefox will be created. You can then go into properties and add the Firefox icon from folder I mentioned. If you have Mate a suggestion I saw is to use the Alacarte menu editor editor that you can install in synaptic as this can then make it easier to add Firefox to task bar.

The old version is likely a package build in your package manager on Mint.

The tarball version from Mozilla is basically just an archive with no installer or package.

You can create a desktop or panel launcher to the firefox-bin. There should be Firefox icons you can use in the firefox/browser/chrome/icons/default/ folder. btw the mention of chrome here has nothing to do with Google Chrome.

Thank you. I don't know how to "create a desktop or panel launcher in the firefox-bin," though. Do you have a short explanation or suggested link? Yes, I found those icons and moved one to the desktop in a comical hope that somehow it might magically connect. It did not. :)

Thank you! That worked. Much easier. I haven't been able to figure out how to get the icon there, but who cares? Any icon will do and I've got one.
