You can set these two prefs to true on the about:config page to see if that in an improvement.

  • browser.tabs.insertAfterCurrent true
  • browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent true

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

I found that the preferences don't do all I want so I have long used this add-on. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/open-tabs-next-to-current/
